Splendid Genesis was designed by Richard Garfield (the designer of Magic: The Gathering) as a celebration of the birth of his first child, his daughter Terry. Richard distributed Magic-backed copies of this card to family, friends, and select business colleagues. It is estimated that approximately 200 copies of Splendid Genesis were given to Richard by the printer, Carta Mundi, but it is not known how many of these were distributed.
Richard asked his friend, artist Monique Thirifay, to create the illustration for Splendid Genesis, and as a gesture of appreciation he gave her an uncut sheet of 20 cards that he also had received from Carta Mundi. In time, this sheet was cut into individual cards and Monique recreated by hand her illustration on the back of each card, autographing and numbering each one.
Monique’s heart-warming illustration of a tiny child's hand clutching the finger of her father evokes the universal human experience of being a parent, making Splendid Genesis a coveted collectible for parents everywhere. The highly limited nature of these artist copies and the human touch added by Monique’s illustration make these the most highly coveted Splendid Genesis cards of all.
